If We Had an Oscar Ballot 2017

oscar-ballots

What follows is a hypothetical scenario in which we are Academy voters who commit the ultimate sin of showing you our completed ballots. Never mind that ballots were due several days ago - we're professional procrastinators.

Note: Like many Oscar voters, we could go through the motions of voting in all 24 races, but, for the sake of honesty (and what we hope the real voters practice), we'll abstain from the categories where we have yet to see all the nominees. So no Animated Feature (though we'd maybe vote for Coco anyway because it's amazing), Foreign Film, Documentary Short, or Documentary Feature (though we were won over by the charming Faces Places). But enough about what we didn't see - here's who and what we're rooting for Sunday night!

BEST PICTURE

The cream of the crop is voted on by a preferential ballot where voters are instructed to rank all the nominees for Best Picture in the order of their personal preference. While this means one could, in effect, vote against a particular film by placing it lower on their ballot, the system is in place to gauge overall support for the top films. Here's what it looks like for us:

Matt

1. Call Me by Your Name
2. Lady Bird
3. Get Out
4. Phantom Thread
5. Dunkirk
6. The Shape of Water
7. The Post
8. Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri
9. Darkest Hour

The top five made up half of my top ten list for the year and the next two were mostly great movies, though I can't say anything nice about #8 and I've mostly forgotten #9.

Nathan

1. Call Me by Your Name
2. Get Out
3. Lady Bird
4. Phantom Thread
5. The Post
6. Dunkirk
7. The Shape of Water
8. Darkest Hour
9. Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri

It's all about the top four here, but I'm happy for 5-7. Eight was fine. May we never have to talk about nine again after Sunday.

BEST DIRECTOR

Matt

Paul Thomas Anderson (Phantom Thread)
Guillermo del Toro (The Shape of Water)
Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird)
Christopher Nolan (Dunkirk)
*Jordan Peele (Get Out)

A close call between all five, with Peele edging out Gerwig and Nolan for me.

Nathan

Paul Thomas Anderson (Phantom Thread)
Guillermo del Toro (The Shape of Water)
*Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird)
Christopher Nolan (Dunkirk)
Jordan Peele (Get Out)

What a great lineup! Gerwig wins by a hair.

BEST ACTOR

Matt

*Timothée Chalamet (Call Me by Your Name)
Daniel Day-Lewis (Phantom Thread)
Daniel Kaluuya (Get Out)
Gary Oldman (Darkest Hour)
Denzel Washington (Roman J. Israel, Esq.)

The performance of the year.

Nathan

*Timothée Chalamet (Call Me by Your Name)
Daniel Day-Lewis (Phantom Thread)
Daniel Kaluuya (Get Out)
Gary Oldman (Darkest Hour)
Denzel Washington (Roman J. Israel, Esq.)

😭 <fire emoji> 😭<broken heart emoji> 😭

BEST ACTRESS

Matt

Sally Hawkins (The Shape of Water)
Frances McDormand (Three Billboards...)
Margot Robbie (I, Tonya)
*Saoirse Ronan (Lady Bird)
Meryl Streep (The Post)

Incredible work from all five. Though I might narrowly think Streep's performance is best, I'd cast a vote for Saoirse. Hawkins might've been a clear choice for me in a less competitive year.

Nathan

Sally Hawkins (The Shape of Water)
Frances McDormand (Three Billboards...)
Margot Robbie (I, Tonya)
*Saoirse Ronan (Lady Bird)
Meryl Streep (The Post)

NAILED IT.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR

Matt

*Willem Dafoe (The Florida Project)
Woody Harrelson (Three Billboards...)
Richard Jenkins (The Shape of Water)
Christopher Plummer (All the Money in the World)
Sam Rockwell (Three Billboards...)

A bit of a shrug of a category in the absence of the Call Me by Your Name fellas.

Nathan

*Willem Dafoe (The Florida Project)
Woody Harrelson (Three Billboards...)
Richard Jenkins (The Shape of Water)
Christopher Plummer (All the Money in the World)
Sam Rockwell (Three Billboards...)

Ugh, what a dumpster fire of a category.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS

Matt

Mary J. Blige (Mudbound)
Allison Janney (I, Tonya)
Lesley Manville (Phantom Thread)
*Laurie Metcalf (Lady Bird)
Octavia Spencer (The Shape of Water)

No contest.

Octavia Spencer (The Shape of Water)

Easy call.

BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY

Matt

The Big Sick
Get Out
*Lady Bird
The Shape of Water
Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri

The hardest choice to make this year. Both The Big Sick and Get Out are just as deserving.

Nathan

The Big Sick
*Get Out
Lady Bird
The Shape of Water
Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri

All great screenplays except for, you know...

BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY

Matt

*Blade Runner 2049

A great set of nominees, with Dunkirk and Mudbound running close behind Deakins IMO.

Darkest Hour
Dunkirk
Mudbound
The Shape of Water

BEST FILM EDITING

Matt

*Baby Driver
Dunkirk
I, Tonya
The Shape of Water
Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri

The first three have very flashy editing work, but I thought the whole came together most seamlessly in Baby Driver.

BEST PRODUCTION DESIGN

Matt

Beauty & the Beast
Blade Runner 2049
Darkest Hour
Dunkirk
*The Shape of Water

For the labs in the government facility, but mainly for the details found in each character's apartment.

Nathan

*The Shape of Water

Not subtle, but wasn't supposed to be.

BEST ORIGINAL SONG

Matt

"Mighty River" (Mudbound)
*"Mystery of Love" (Call Me by Your Name)
"Remember Me" (Coco)
"Stand Up for Something" (Marshall)
"This Is Me" (The Greatest Showman)

Sufjan Stevens' work on Call Me by Your Name was note perfect (and this one isn't even the best one in the movie!). I have no shame in admitting "This Is Me" runs a close second in my book.

Nathan

"Mighty River" (Mudbound)
"Mystery of Love" (Call Me by Your Name)
*"Remember Me" (Coco)
"Stand Up for Something" (Marshall)
"This Is Me" (The Greatest Showman)

Voting for this mostly on how well it serves the movie. (Very well.)

Dear Matt, I *do* know there's a difference between sound mixing and sound editing, but Dunkirk deserves both IMO.
