2020 Emmy Awards Predictions

2020 Emmy Awards Predictions

The 72nd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards will be handed out this evening, honoring the best in television from the 2019-2020 season.

HBO is hoping “Succession” will succeed the finally ended “Game of Thrones” with a Drama Series victory, while Canadian underdog “Schitt’s Creek” hopes to follow the path of last year’s Comedy Series winner “Fleabag” with a win for its final season. It’s HBO’s incredible limited series “Watchmen”, however, that will walk away with the most Emmys this season. The virtual, semi-live festivities will air on ABC beginning at 8pm ET, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel. My full predictions are below…

2019 Emmy Awards Predictions

2019 Emmy Awards Predictions

The 71st Annual Primetime Emmy Awards will be handed out this evening, honoring the best in television from the 2018-2019 season.

HBO is hoping to capitalize on industry goodwill for the final seasons of two Emmy darlings in “Game of Thrones” and “Veep”, though it’s the Emmys - so anything’s possible! Taking a cue from this year’s Oscars ceremony, the show will have no official host and will air live on FOX beginning at 8pm ET. My full predictions are below…

2018 Emmy Awards Predictions

2018 Emmy Awards Predictions

The 70th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards are this evening, honoring the best in television from the 2017-2018 season.

Though there are a few sure bets (this is the Emmys, after all), many of the top categories offer some suspense as to what names the final envelope contains. Drama Series looks to be a race between “Game of Thrones” and “The Handmaid’s Tale”; while on the Comedy side it’s “Atlanta” versus “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” The only thing I’m rooting for is a win in any category for “The Americans”. “SNL”’s Michael Che and Colin Jost host tonight’s shenanigans, which will air live on NBC beginning at 8pm ET. 2018 Emmy Nominations Predictions

2018 Emmy Nominations Predictions

Nominations for the 70th Annual Emmy Awards, honoring the best of the best in television from the past year, are set to be unveiled the morning of July 12. HBO's juggernaut Game of Thrones took a year off from last year's awards (after not airing its seventh season in time for consideration), so it's hoping to roar back into contention this time, while reigning Best Comedy champ Veep will be the one to step aside as we wait for its final season. 2018 will be voters' last chance to award some unrewarded shows and performers like FX's The Americans (my fave) and The Crown's Claire Foy, but it will also be their first chance to award potential new favorites like BBC America's Killing Eve or Amazon's The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. One never really knows which direction Emmy voters will swerve in - hell, this year they even have the option to dip back into old favorites thought once finished (hey, Will & Grace!) or long dormant (Curb Your Enthusiasm) - but read on for my last-minute, foolhardy predictions of which way they’ll go in 16 of the top categories.

2017 Emmy Awards Predictions

2017 Emmy Awards Predictions

The 69th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards will be doled out this evening, honoring the best television had to offer in the 2016-2017 season. With "Game of Thrones" sitting this year out (it's most recent season will be Emmy eligible at next year's awards), there's a lot of new blood in the Drama categories - and Best Drama Series is possibly the most competitive and unpredictable it has ever been! That said, the Emmys also like to turn on the autopilot, so there should be a handful of repeat winners to counteract all the newness.

I've watched more scripted TV in the past year than any other (36 complete seasons of eligible shows - yikes), but that won't help me one bit with my predictions! Below are my picks for who and what might take home a golden trophy tonight in the rumored order the 27 categories are to be presented in. Stephen Colbert hosts this year's soiree, which will air live on CBS beginning at 8pm ET, and don't forget to mix a few cocktails and follow along with our commentary on Twitter all evening @CineMunch.

2017 Emmy Nominations Predictions

Nominations for the 69th Annual Emmy Awards, honoring the best of the best in television from the past year, will be announced tomorrow, July 13th. With HBO's juggernaut Game of Thrones ineligible (it didn't air new episodes within the June-May window) and a number of much-buzzed first year series looking likely to break through, there may be a healthy amount of surprises among the nominees. Though this is the Emmys, so maybe not. I'll be cheering loudly for The Leftovers and Westworld on the Drama side, all things Big Little Lies in the Limited Series categories, and Carrie Coon times two. Below are my last-minute predictions in 16 of the top categories.

2017 Golden Globe Awards Predictions

2017 Golden Globe Awards Predictions

Contrary to what the calendar says, the holidays are not over. They've only just begun! Welcome to Awards Season 2016-2017, continuing this weekend with the Golden Globe Awards!

Hollywood's best and brightest (or in some cases just newest) stars of ALL the screens will gather Sunday night dressed in their second finest frocks for the second most important red carpet of the year. The awards will be handed out by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, whose membership numbers fewer than 100, so their choices do make for the occasional head scratch, eyebrow raise, or spit take. Jimmy Fallon hosts and some lady named Meryl Streep will receive this year's Cecil B. DeMille Lifetime Achievement Award.

So grab a pitcher of your second favorite mixed drink, follow along with us on Twitter @CineMunch throughout the telecast (starting at 8pm ET on NBC), and read on for my foolhardy predictions!

2016 Emmy Awards Predictions

2016 Emmy Awards Predictions

The 68th Annual Emmy Awards will bestow show shiny trophies upon the best in television from the 2015-2016 TV season on Sunday, September 18th. Oh, the Emmys. They either award the same shows and performers year after year or the winners list is full of several WTFs, though that's never consistent from year to year (or even within the same year), so they can be difficult to predict. This will likely be a year full of sweeps: "Game of Thrones", "Veep", and especially "The People v O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story" are expected to clean up in their respective fields.

And victories for those programs would be more than fine with us! Our latest podcast detailed all our favorite things from the past year in TV, many of which are nominated this year. Below you'll find Matt's predictions in all televised categories, in the presumed order they will be announced. Jimmy Kimmel hosts this year's show, which will air on ABC beginning at 8pm ET. Be sure to mix some drinks and follow along with our commentary on Twitter @CineMunch.

CineDrunk: Emmys & the Best of Television 2016

With TV's glitterati set to honor themselves at the Emmy Awards this coming Sunday, we recently gathered the CineDrunk crew for another (indulgent) TeleDrunk extravaganza/eleganza.

In an (unsuccessful) effort to avoid inane predictions and meandering discussion, we each crafted a trio of top five lists: our favorite nominations, our favorite performances, and our favorite shows from the 2015-2016 TV season.

Credit: Bee Raw

Our drink of choice this time 'round comes from the master mixologists at Bee Raw (a company to which we have no affiliation, we swear). Their guide to honey cocktails has made us regulars at the liquor store and given us a new favorite for everyday drinking: the Bee's Knees.

With ingredients this simple, we recommend buying the best quality you can afford. (At the very least squeeze your lemons fresh.) Your tastebuds will... buzz with approval.

Bee's Knees
recipe from Bee Raw

4 parts London Dry Gin
1½ parts lemon juice
1½ parts Bee Raw Honey simple syrup

1. Combine gin, lemon juice and honey simple syrup in a cocktail
mixing glass.
2. Fill halfway with ice and stir until well chilled, about 30
seconds.
3. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass.
4. Garnish with lemon twist.
5. Get your buzz on.

The Creative Arts Emmys were held over the weekend (where Nathan's fifth favorite AND most favorite nomination from this year became a winner), while the main event airs this Sunday, September 18 on ABC. Matt's final predictions to come!

2016 Emmy Nominations Predictions

2016 Emmy Nominations Predictions

Nominations for the 68th Annual Emmy Awards, honoring the best of the best in television, will be announced tomorrow, July 14th. While the television academy rarely strays from their well-tread path of favorites in selecting their nominees, there were enough departing series (namely Mad Men) or shows that didn't air new episodes during the past year (like Louie) to free up at least one slot in almost every category - meaning there's still room for Frasier or The West Wing to nab a nomination or two! ...I'm mostly kidding. Below are my last-minute predictions in 16 of the top categories.
