2020 Golden Globe Awards Predictions

GervaisGlobes2020

The marathon of awards season kicks off in earnest tonight with the presentation of the 77th Annual Golden Globe Awards!

Hollywood's best and brightest (or in some cases just newest) stars of ALL the screens will gather Sunday night dressed in their second finest frocks for the second most important red carpet of the year. The awards will be handed out by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, whose membership numbers only around 90, so their choices do make for the occasional head scratch, eyebrow raise, or spit take. Tom Hanks will receive this year's Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement in film, and Ellen DeGeneres will take home the Carol Burnett Award for lifetime achievement in television.

Read on for my sure-to-be-inaccurate predictions, and tune in starting at 8pm ET on NBC as Ricky Gervais returns as host for this year’s drunken soiree!

MOTION PICTURES

Best Motion Picture – Drama
*The Irishman
Joker
Marriage Story
1917
The Two Popes

I’d rule out those Popes, but any of the other four could conceivably win here (remember when Bohemian Rhapsody won this last year??). Conservatively, I’ll say Scorsese’s 3.5 hour opus narrowly defeats Joker.

Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy
Dolemite is My Name
Jojo Rabbit
Knives Out
*Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood
Rocketman

Jojo Rabbit is probably a stronger contender than I’d like to think, but the smart money is definitely on the Tarantino here.

Best Director – Motion Picture
*Bong Joon Ho (Parasite)
Sam Mendes (1917)
Todd Phillips (Joker)
Martin Scorsese (The Irishman)
Quentin Tarantino (Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood)

A stacked category, certainly, though I think Director Bong will prevail much like Alfonso Cuarón did last year with Roma.

Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama
Christian Bale (Ford v Ferrari)
Antonio Banderas (Pain & Glory)
*Adam Driver (Marriage Story)
Joaquin Phoenix (Joker)
Jonathan Pryce (The Two Popes)

Banderas could surprise (and I would greatly welcome that development), but it’s likely down to Driver vs Phoenix for the remainder of the season. Phoenix is a more Globes-y choice, but I prefer Driver, so I’m siding with him in this race.

Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama
Cynthia Erivo (Harriet)
Scarlett Johansson (Marriage Story)
Saoirse Ronan (Little Women)
Charlize Theron (Bombshell)
*Renée Zellweger (Judy)

The Globes have always loved Zellweger, so it would be pretty major if her comeback bid didn’t result in a statue from the HFPA.

Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy
Daniel Craig (Knives Out)
Roman Griffin Davis (Jojo Rabbit)
Leonardo DiCaprio (Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood)
*Taron Egerton (Rocketman)
Eddie Murphy (Dolemite is My Name)

While DiCaprio is in serious contention, I think this race is narrowly Eddie Murphy’s to lose. That said, Egerton is well-liked and has been charming all of Hollywood this awards season. A dark-horse triumph here would provide him a much-needed boost of exposure while Oscar voters have their ballots in hand.

Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy
Ana de Armas (Knives Out)
*Awkwafina (The Farewell)
Cate Blanchett (Where’d You Go, Bernadette?)
Beanie Feldstein (Booksmart)
Emma Thompson (Late Night)

As the only performer in this race with any level of Oscar buzz, Awkwafina should coast to victory here.

Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture
Tom Hanks (A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood)
Anthony Hopkins (The Two Popes)
Al Pacino (The Irishman)
Joe Pesci (The Irishman)
*Brad Pitt (Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood)

Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture
Kathy Bates (Richard Jewell)
Annette Bening (The Report)
Laura Dern (Marriage Story)
*Jennifer Lopez (Hustlers)
Margot Robbie (Bombshell)

It’s the Globes. It’s got to be JLo, right? Fingers crossed!

Best Screenplay
The Irishman
Marriage Story
Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood
*Parasite
The Two Popes

I’m hoping it’s a stellar night for Team Parasite, though Marriage Story or …Hollywood are more likely to take this.

Best Motion Picture – Foreign Language
The Farewell – USA
Les Misérables – France
Pain & Glory – Spain
*Parasite – South Korea
Portrait of a Lady on Fire – France

Parasite, a strong Oscar Best Picture contender, was ineligible for the main Motion Picture- Drama category with this group on account of it not being in English - strange for an awards body named the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, but regardless, it will handily win in this (VERY strong) field.

Best Motion Picture – Animated
Frozen II
How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World
The Lion King
Missing Link
*Toy Story 4

Best Original Song – Motion Picture
“Beautiful Ghosts” (Cats)
“(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again” (Rocketman)
*“Into the Unknown” (Frozen II)
“Spirit” (The Lion King)
“Stand Up” (Harriet)

Best Original Score – Motion Picture
Joker
Little Women
Marriage Story
Motherless Brooklyn
*1917

TELEVISION

Best Television Series – Drama
Big Little Lies (HBO)
The Crown
(Netflix)
Killing Eve
(BBC America)
The Morning Show
(Apple TV+)
*Succession
(HBO)

I wouldn’t rule out any of these shows (though a Big Little Lies win would surprise me).

Best Television Series – Comedy
Barry (HBO)
*Fleabag
(Amazon)
The Kominsky Method
(Netflix)
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
(Amazon)
The Politician
(Netflix)

Fleabag should add a few Globes to its pile of Emmys.

Best Actor in a TV Series – Drama
Brian Cox (Succession)
Kit Harington (Game of Thrones)
Rami Malek (Mr. Robot)
Tobias Menzies (The Crown)
*Billy Porter (Pose)

Cox and Menzies will pose (sorry, had to) as threats, but I think Porter takes the award many (including me) thought he’d win last year. Harington is GoT’s only nomination this year (the Globes never cared for the show as much as the Emmys), so maybe voters who are fans rally around their last chance to award the series.

Best Actress in a TV Series – Drama
*Jennifer Aniston (The Morning Show)
Olivia Colman (The Crown)
Jodie Comer (Killing Eve)
Nicole Kidman (Big Little Lies)
Reese Witherspoon (The Morning Show)

Seems unwise to bet against Colman at awards shows these days, but I’ll give the slight edge to Aniston on account of this being the Globes and all.

Best Actor in a TV Series – Comedy
Michael Douglas (The Kominsky Method)
Bill Hader (Barry)
Ben Platt (The Politician)
*Paul Rudd (Living with Yourself)
Ramy Youssef (Ramy)

     Who knows - why not!

Best Actress in a TV Series – Comedy
Christina Applegate (Dead to Me)
Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel)
Kirsten Dunst (On Becoming a God in Central Florida)
Natasha Lyonne (Russian Doll)
*Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag)

Best TV Movie or Limited Series
Catch-22 (Hulu)
*Chernobyl
(HBO)
Fosse/Verdon
(FX)
The Loudest Voice
(Showtime)
Unbelievable
(Netflix)

Best Actor in a Limited Series or TV Movie
Christopher Abbott (Catch-22)
Sacha Baron Cohen (The Spy)
Russell Crowe (The Loudest Voice)
*Jared Harris (Chernobyl)
Sam Rockwell (Fosse/Verdon)

Best Actress in a Limited Series or TV Movie
Kaitlyn Dever (Unbelievable)
Joey King (The Act)
Helen Mirren (Catherine the Great)
Merritt Wever (Unbelievable)
*Michelle Williams (Fosse/Verdon)

Best Supporting Actress in a Series, Limited Series or TV Movie
Patricia Arquette (The Act)
*Helena Bonham Carter (The Crown)
Toni Collette (Unbelievable)
Meryl Streep (Big Little Lies)
Emily Watson (Chernobyl)

Best Supporting Actor in a Series, Limited Series or TV Movie
Alan Arkin (The Kominsky Method)
*Kieran Culkin (Succession)
Andrew Scott (Fleabag)
Stellan Skarsgård (Chernobyl)
Henry Winkler (Barry)
