2020 Emmy Awards Predictions

2019emmys

The 72nd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards will be handed out this evening, honoring the best in television from the 2019-2020 season.

HBO is hoping “Succession” will succeed the finally ended “Game of Thrones” with a Drama Series victory, while Canadian underdog “Schitt’s Creek” hopes to follow the path of last year’s Comedy Series winner “Fleabag” with a win for its final season. It’s HBO’s incredible limited series “Watchmen”, however, that will walk away with the most Emmys this season. The virtual, semi-live festivities will air on ABC beginning at 8pm ET, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel. My full predictions are below…

Outstanding Drama Series
"Better Call Saul" (AMC)
”The Crown” (Netflix)
”The Handmaid’s Tale” (Hulu)
"Killing Eve" (BBC America)
”The Mandalorian” (Disney+)
"Ozark" (Netflix)
”Stranger Things” (Netflix)
”Succession” (HBO)

Although “Succession” under-performed with voters last year for its first season (remarkably none of that excellent cast was nominated last year while “Game of Thrones” actors hogged a good portion of nomination slots), the massive uptick in nominations for its even-better second season indicates the dysfunctional Roy family will take this for HBO. “Ozark” is the only other contender here I could see winning, though if there’s a wild upset it could be surprise nominee “The Mandalorian”.

Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series
Jennifer Aniston, "The Morning Show"
Olivia Colman, “The Crown”
Jodie Comer, “Killing Eve”
Laura Linney, “Ozark”
Sandra Oh, “Killing Eve”
Zendaya, “Euphoria”

Comer edged out a surprise win last year, though the heat surrounding “Eve” has cooled enough that I don’t expect her or the supremely overdue Sandra Oh to prevail. In what is likely a Colman vs. Linney battle, I opted instead to stick with my personal choice and SAG winner Aniston despite her show missing a Drama Series nomination.

Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series
Jason Bateman, "Ozark"
Sterling K. Brown, "This Is Us"
Steve Carell, “The Morning Show”
Brian Cox, “Succession”
Billy Porter, “Pose”
Jeremy Strong, "Succession"

“Succession” has a great shot at picking up several acting awards (Cherry Jones already won the Guest Actress in a Drama prize for the show last night), though its biggest hurdle may be internal competition - especially here, as both Cox and Strong would make for worthy winners. If they do split votes from each other, its likely Bateman who emerges victorious (to go with his surprise Directing Emmy for “Ozark” last year).

Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series
Helena Bonham Carter, “The Crown”
Laura Dern, “Big Little Lies”
Julia Garner, “Ozark”
Thandie Newton, "Westworld"
Fiona Shaw, “Killing Eve”
Sarah Snook, “Succession”
Meryl Streep, “Big Little Lies”
Samira Wiley, “The Handmaid’s Tale”

Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series
Nicholas Braun, “Succession”
Billy Crudup, “The Morning Show”
Kieran Culkin, "Succession"
Mark Duplass, "The Morning Show"
Giancarlo Esposito, “Better Call Saul”
Matthew Mcfadyen, “Succession”
Bradley Whitford, “The Handmaid’s Tale”
Jeffrey Wright, “Westworld”

Just a hunch, though Culkin and Crudup are right in the mix.

Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series
"The Crown" — "Aberfan" (Benjamin Caron)
"The Crown" — "Cri de Coeur" (Jessica Hobbs)
"Homeland" — "Prisoners of War" (Lesli Linka Glatter)
"The Morning Show" — "The Interview" (Mimi Leder)
"Ozark" — "Fire Pink" (Alik Sakharov)
”Ozark” — “Su Casa Es Mi Casa” (Ben Semanoff)
"Succession" — "Hunting" (Andrij Parekh)
”Succession” — “This Is Not For Tears” (Mark Mylod)

Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series
"Better Call Saul" — "Bad Choice Road" (Thomas Schnauz)
”Better Call Saul” — “Bagman” (Gordon Smith)
"The Crown" — "Aberfan" (Peter Morgan)
"Ozark" — "All In" (Chris Mundy)
"Ozark" — "Boss Fight" (John Shiban)
"Ozark" — "Fire Pink" (Miki Johnson)
"Succession" — "This Is Not For Tears" (Jesse Armstrong)

Outstanding Comedy Series
”Curb Your Enthusiasm” (HBO)
"Dead to Me" (Netflix)
”The Good Place” (NBC)
”Insecure” (HBO)
”The Kominsky Method” (Netflix)
”The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” (Amazon)
"Schitt’s Creek” (Pop TV)
”What We Do in the Shadows” (FX)

Sentiment is definitely on the side of the now-concluded, little Canadian charmer “Schitt’s Creek”, with previous champ “Maisel” running a healthy second.

Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series
Christina Applegate, “Dead to Me”
Rachel Brosnahan, "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel"
Linda Cardelini, “Dead to Me”
Catherine O’Hara, “Schitt’s Creek”
Issa Rae, “Insecure”
Tracee Ellis Ross, “Black-ish”

A stacked category, to be sure, but it better be the inimitable Catherine O’Hara.

Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series
Anthony Anderson, “black-ish”
Don Cheadle, “Black Monday”
Ted Danson, "The Good Place"
Michael Douglas, “The Kominsky Method”
Eugene Levy, “Schitt’s Creek”
Ramy Youssef, “Ramy”

In what I see as a pretty close 3-way race, I think all the love for the final season of “Schitt’s Creek” pushes Levy past Danson and Globe winner Youssef.

Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series
Alex Borstein, "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel"
D’Arcy Carden, “The Good Place”
Betty Gilpin, “GLOW”
Marin Hinkle, “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”
Kate McKinnon, "Saturday Night Live"
Annie Murphy, “Schitt’s Creek”
Yvonne Orji, “Insecure”
Cecily Strong, “Saturday Night Live”

Borstein would make it 3-in-a-row with another win here, but her competition (particularly Murphy) won’t make it easy.

Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series
Mahershala Ali, “Ramy”
Alan Arkin, “The Kominsky Method”
Andre Braugher, “Brooklyn Nine-Nine”
Sterling K. Brown, “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”
William Jackson Harper, “The Good Place”
Daniel Levy, “Schitt’s Creek”
Tony Shalhoub, "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel"
Kenan Thompson, “Saturday Night Live”

“Schitt’s Creek” has a reasonably good shot at winning all four Comedy acting races (with Levy in strong consideration here), though just as I suspect “Maisel” will repeat in Supporting Actress, I’m predicting a second victory for Shalhoub in this category.

Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series
"The Great" — "The Great (Pilot)" (Matt Shakman)
"The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" — "It’s Comedy or Cabbage" (Amy Sherman-Palladino)
"The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" — "Marvelous Radio" (Daniel Palladino)
”Modern Family” — “Finale Part 2” (Gail Mancuso)
”Ramy” — “Miakhalifa.mov” (Ramy Youssef)
”Schitt’s Creek” — “Happy Ending” (Andrew Cividino & Daniel Levy)
”Will & Grace” — “We Love Lucy” (James Burrows)

Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series
”The Good Place” — “Whenever You’re Ready” (Michael Schur)
”The Great” — “The Great (Pilot)” (Tony McNamara)
”Schitt’s Creek” — “Happy Ending” (Daniel Levy)
”Schitt’s Creek” — “The Presidential Suite” (David West Read)
”What We Do in the Shadows” — “Collaboration” (Sam Johnson & Chris Marcil)
”What We Do in the Shadows” — “Ghosts” (Paul Simms)
”What We Do in the Shadows” — “On The Run” (Stefani Robinson)

Outstanding Reality-Competition Program
"The Masked Singer" (Fox)
"Nailed It!" (Netflix)
"RuPaul's Drag Race" (VH1)
"Top Chef" (Bravo)
"The Voice" (NBC)

Outstanding Variety Talk Series
"The Daily Show with Trevor Noah” (Comedy Central)
"Full Frontal with Samantha Bee" (TBS)
"Jimmy Kimmel Live!" (ABC)
"Last Week Tonight with John Oliver" (HBO)
"The Late Show with Stephen Colbert" (CBS)

Outstanding Limited Series
"Little Fires Everywhere" (Hulu)
"Mrs. America" (FX)
"Unbelievable" (Netflix)
"Unorthodox" (Netflix)
"Watchmen" (HBO)

This year’s most nominated program should handily take this.

Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie
Cate Blanchett, “Mrs. America”
Shira Haas, “Unorthodox”
Regina King, “Watchmen”
Octavia Spencer, “Self Made”
Kerry Washington, “Little Fires Everywhere”

Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie
Jeremy Irons, “Watchmen”
Hugh Jackman, “Bad Education”
Paul Mescal, “Normal People”
Jeremy Pope, “Hollywood”
Mark Ruffalo, “I Know This Much Is True”

If enough voters checked out “Normal People”, Mescal stands a good chance at upsetting Hollywood titans Jackman and Ruffalo, but I’m more conservatively estimating Jackman slips past Ruffalo for the win here.

Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Movie
Uzo Aduba, “Mrs. America”
Toni Collette, “Unbelivable”
Margo Martindale, “Mrs. America”
Jean Smart, “Watchmen”
Holland Taylor, “Hollywood”
Tracey Ullman, “Mrs. America”

In a category filled with heavyweights (all are previous Emmy winners with at least 4 nominations to their name), Smart has the edge with Collette just behind her.

Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie
Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, “Watchmen”
Jovan Adepo, “Watchmen”
Tituss Burgess, “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Kimmy vs. the Reverend”
Louis Gossett Jr., “Watchmen”
Dylan McDermott, “Hollywood”
Jim Parsons, “Hollywood”

Outstanding Directing for a Limited Series, Movie or Dramatic Special
”Little Fires Everywhere” — “Find A Way” (Lynn Shelton)
”Normal People” — “Episode 5” (Lenny Abrahamson)
”Unorthodox” (Maria Schrader)
”Watchmen” — “It’s Summer And We’re Running Out Of Ice” (Nicole Kassell)
”Watchmen” — “Little Fear Of Lightning” (Steph Green)
”Watchmen” — “This Extraordinary Being” (Stephen Williams)

Outstanding Writing for a Limited Series, Movie or Dramatic Special
”Mrs. America” — “Shirley” (Tanya Barfield)
”Normal People” — “Episode 3” (Sally Rooney & Alice Birch)
”Unbelievable” — “Episode 1” (Susannah Grant, Michael Chabon, & Ayelet Waldman)
”Unorthodox” — “Part 1” (Anna Winger)
”Watchmen” — “This Extraordinary Being” (Damon Lindelof & Cord Jefferson)
